Most people deciding on nail fungus treatments choose topical products that are applied externally to the infected nail(s). But unfortunately it’s not as simple as just slapping on some anti-fungal nail paint every once in a while. The fungus that causes the infection is located underneath the nail (in technical terms, this is known as a subungal location) and is very protected in this position. The only way that you’ll cure it is by twice daily application for many months, if not years.

Yes months! Even years!

It took me 18 long months of consistent treatment for me to get rid of my infection. I tied a ribbon around my toothbrush to help remind me to apply the treatment. But I still found my motivation flagging every few weeks as I could not see any visible signs of improvement.

So I started to wonder: Can technology help?

There are already some great apps on the market that serve as reminders for people to take their medication. With nail fungus infections I’d like to take this one step further and include some sort of tracking device. Every week or so I’d like to take a picture of my infected nail and I’d like the app to calculate the coverage of the fungus across the nail. You see, many of the improvements will be invisible to the naked eye. But a 1mm shrinkage (for example) is improvement and I’d like to know about it.

Without that feedback loop to tell you that your twice daily treatments are working, it’s far to easy to give up and blame the product you are using.   If you don’t believe me about what a hassle it is to treat a nail fungus infection, just check out the step by step treatment video by Mary Glen over at FungusFacts.com  She lays it out in no uncertain terms.
