When it comes to technology in the vacuum industry, most companies haven’t done much in the last several years.  However, you don’t have to read through hundreds of different vacuum cleaner reviews to understand that one company stands out when it comes to improving on the ‘old’ technology: Dyson.  In fact, when you consider that Dyson practically re-invented the vacuum cleaner just a few decades ago the following quote by a Hoover engineer is very telling.  He said:

“When it comes to vacuum cleaner technology, nothing has really been improved upon in the last 60 years. ”

-Hoover Engineer

Really?  I beg to differ.  The fact is, when you look at the machines that Dyson makes it’s very obvious that we can still improve the technology and make them better and easier to use than ever before.  Take the Dyson DC25 as an example.  If you compare the suction power (as measured in Air-watts or CFM), it will literally suck the pants off the lower end competition.   Let’s compare the model to the CFM numbers I was given by the Hoover engineer.  While he couldn’t give me exact numbers in terms of specific models, he explained that most their vacuums will produce a CFM between 55 and 70.  Not bad, until you look at some of the higher end vacuums such as the Dysons.  With a Dyson you can expect those numbers to be well above 100 CFM, and with more airflow you can expect more suction power and more efficient cleaning.  Then, you can look at other features, such as weight and accessories that come with the vacuum.  Dyson’s telescoping wand, for instance, allows you to reach up to 28 feet, which means you can vacuum an entire set of stairs without having to move the machine even once.  That saves you on back pain, time, and hassle.  So yes, the Dyson costs more, but you are paying for technology, which I for one am more than willing to pay for.
